Dressing up a fireplace/chimney - ideas?

Looking for some ideas to dress out this fireplace/chimney.  I'd almost prefer to just remove it and open up the area but the budget won't support that.

Rental house, basic is OK.  Thoughts?  A photoshop'd rendition of white brick is shown last as another idea...

How much is costing to get rid vs building up?

Based on Location I will get rid off the fireplace and it’s cheaper too.
