First time Owner Builder

Posted

So I just landed what I believe to be a great deal on half acre here in California. What tips can y’all give me to be either an owner builder or hire out some people to build a home. What would be the better option to do? I’ve also thought about maybe putting a mobile home.

Please forgive me if this is posted incorrectly. I’m a first time poster

I used to be a residential builder for hire. I do commercial now so I don't have to deal with the likes of you lol.

There is no reason why you cant be an owner builder today in the information age. Be aware that subs will try and take advantage of you no matter what your experience though. Not always but just be aware. Hire a GC for your first one. At least see what it will cost to hire one. Listen and double check  what they do. Dont micro manage but make sure they are doing you a good job. You and they should complement each other. Both you and them want to make a profit. Make a profit then for both of you.

Rinse....repeat...

After a few then try it on your own. It is not that hard once you learn the basics. You will make a mistake or three on every job even after you have 30 years experience. That's ok. Just fix it and go on.  Now you are your own GC. Best of luck.
