Trying to Understand Zoning

I did various Googles searches to learn more about Zoning,  just so can I can get more familiar and better understand what different codes mean. Didn't find a helpful site, more questions than answers..

Can someone recommend a good website or book?

I found a abandoned Property in Charlotte that designated as R5 zoning. I want to better understand what that means..

Thanks

Instead of a website or book, I suggest that you acquaint yourself with how zoning is done in areas you are interested in. For Charlotte (I assume it's Charlotte NC) see:

I took a brief look at it, but I found the one for NYC lot more detailed in comparison:

In most cities they have a planning department that handles this. My wife worked for one and even developers come in with questions.  For Charlotte see: , click on zoning services. Visit or call the planning office with particular questions.
