Good or Bad Marketing Idea?

I have been reading a lot here on Bp about marketing, things like Direct mail, internet, driving for dollars. What I would like to know is what about ads in local newspapers Is that not a good idea, or are there drawbacks?

There are a couple of investors in my market that are in the paper every time all the time.  I've wondered about their ROI.

Older folks still use the Yellow Pages and read the newspaper, and they are a good group to target because they could be:

1) Downsizing2) Moving to assisted living3) Moving in with kids/familyPlus, their properties often need to be updated/rehabbed.  This profile of the newspaper reader correlates well to our business.

I have never taken out a newspaper ad but I have heard of them working well.

Older people are mainly the ones who still read the printed newspaper and quite possibly exactly who you are trying to reach.

#1)  Get the paper and see if someone is already advertising there.

#2)  Find out how much to run the add for a few months.

#3)  Determine if you have enough marketing money to see what the results are

#4)  Report back here and share what you have learned.

Thank you Rob that's  what I was thinking. But Walter makes a good point too. I thought maybe that was why I didn't see anyone talking about it.  but to me buying mailing lists seems a bit steep as well.

Cost of print ads are very expensive when compared to a target effort a direct mail or website will provide. Whats going to be the best use of money? Thats the question you need to ask yourself.
