Newcomer to St. Louis from So Cal (Work temporary relocation)

Hi all,

I work for a large commercial GC and potentially headed out of state to St. Louis for a project we have in the pipeline. I would be there for about a year and a half on per diem and likely just make that my home for the time being. I currently own a few long term rentals in Southern California so I am not a stranger to the real estate game, but definitely a stranger to the midwest market. My plan is to buy a property for the year or so I am there and then turn it into a rental property afterwards once I leave (either short term or long term rentals).

Was hoping to get some insight into the local St. Louis Metro area - areas to avoid, areas to look, areas with up and coming markets, and any other tips locals could lend to a newcomer. I started browsing redfin and zillow for listings to try to get some ideas but really don't know what to be on the hunt for.

I am 30 years old, social, active, like to be outside or go out at night as well so also looking for some cool younger crowd areas.

Appreciate any insight you can lend!

Hey @Ben Capone, I’d live there for a month before buying just to get a feel for the neighborhoods. When you find something you like, call a couple of local property managers to confirm rent numbers before offering. And if you're even considering short-term rentals, check the rules upfront so you don’t get surprised later.
