Real Estate License: Online or In person class?

Question

Hello real estate agents! I am considering obtaining my RE license, mostly for educational purposes as I get started in investing. I think it would be beneficial for other reasons as well, such as earning the commission on my own transactions, having access to the MLS, and because of considerations of the 750 hour rule (will discuss with tax advisor, but I am likely to meet this real estate profession election for tax purposes). My question is: Does it matter much if I obtain the education component online or in person classes? I love the flexibility of studying on my own, as well as being able to focus my time and attention on topics that interest me most as I self study, rather than taking a course that will mostly just teach me to pass the exam (since my overall goal here is education). However, I worry if I don't do in person classes, I will miss out on valuable real life education that others may share. Thoughts?

Congrats on your new career, too. I have thought about getting my Real Estate License to accompany my investor work but really wondered if it affects the deals you can get. From what I understand, if as an investor find this unbelievable deal you have to make sure as an agent that you give the seller fair market value and as an investor you don't necessarily have to do that? Anyone find that is the case and if so has it affected your career as an investor and/or agent?

I prefer sitting in class. This gives you the opportunity to pose questions and get additional help on what you need help with. Personally, that is the ONLY way to go for the best possible education. Don't just learn how to pass the test, but learn that things mean..the nuts and bolts of the profession.

Hi Sara,Congrats on your new journey, I'm at the start of my career as a full-time investor and real estate sales agent as well.For me, doing it online was the way to go. I understand that with multiple people learning together, interesting questions and scenarios can arise that just wouldn't necessarily spawn when you're learning on your own.However, there are wonderful online courses now that actually take time to give you real life examples and scenarios of why a topic is important to learn. I took Continuing Ed Express for my real estate license courses and it was an amazing experience. I studied at my own pace, and each section highlighted essentials that will give you the exact info you needed to pass the exam (which comes in handy when you're on a subject that doesn't much interest you, giving you more time to strongly focus on the sections you like).Other online programs may be different, but I can say with a certainty that my online classes had a wealth of information, and I go back to sections even to this day to go over certain nuggets :)I hope that helps,Duane
