Is investing in tax liens a good idea for a beginner?

I'm thinking about investing in tax liens in NJ.  This would be my first transaction in real estate.  Any suggestions?

You should read through @Ned Carey's post. He is the tax lien king of Baltimore.

This is my view of tax liens....to make good money at it requires a large volume. Ned I believe bids on thousands of liens.

Im a pretty smart guy...and I think tax lien investing is incredibly complicated and way over my head.  I like rentals. Easy, straight forward. I buy the property, rent it out, collect the rent, pay my mortgage, and pay for some repairs when they arise.
