Can you guess what I found behind a ceiling vent today?

Question

If you guessed  it was a vinyl plank duct taped to the duct work blocking any heat, then you would be right!!

I just move into my first house hack, and this morning I notice a vent in the living room and no air was blowing out of it. I unscrewed the vent to notice that there was a vinyl plank duck tapped to the duct work blocking any heat. I removed the plank. Is there any logical reason someone would block a vent like this?

LOL, without knowing the layout I would venture to say that they simply wanted to cut off heat or air to that vent in an effort to better regulate the room temp. We have used magnetic strips to do the same on floor vents in our old home. This was particularly helpful in the laundry room which did not need to have the air regulated that much. Opening the vented doors seemed sufficient so we covered it. Our strips were exterior so no extreme actions but that’s what I suspect. Some

People may not think to get what we used and take a cheaper route - shoulder shrug.

Perhaps that room gets too hot or cold, so they put that there.

@Michael King  That would have been a surprise!! There was just more duct tape.

It is functional. I took it off and heat came out right away. I am in Minnesota. They may have blocked by the tenants in the summer to stop the AC from making the basement unit any colder and forgot to take it off in the winter/fall so they could get heat.

Maybe that was the drug storage location...   Unless they are too lazy to get a vent that you can close.

Is the ceiling vent functional? Maybe that was their fix for it.

What was behind the vinyl plank? Lots of stolen cash?

Thank you for your response. I am leaning towards laziness. I hope it was just the heat or AC they were trying to stop from coming out of that vent...
