Should I charge tenants for hole in carpet?

Question

My tenants of 4 years are moving out and they showed me a hole in the carpet

The carpet is kinda old and I think it was normal wear not anything they did wrong

Tenants are expecting to pay for it out of their deposit but I don’t think they should. It will need to be replaced

Should I charge them?

@Jim Stanley I think you already answered your own question. If the carpet was old and you were already planning on replacing it, then I'd thank them for being honest and bringing it your attention and tell them not to worry about it. It sounds like they've been good tenants for you over the past 4 years, so I personally wouldn't charge them if it's wear and tear like you said.

If it is normal wear and tear and the carpet is old, I'd thank them for being honest and pointing it out but that you won't take it out of their deposit as the carpet is old and you were going to replace it anyways.

I’ve had tenants kids get stains all over carpets in Rooms that I was already planning on replacing and did not charge them a single penny. I’ve also had tenants destroy carpets that we’re still very usable and had a lot of life in it and in those cases, I did charge(prorated). It just depends on the current quality/condition and expected future life of the carpet.
