What even is BiggerPockets?

Question

So I've joined BiggerPockets recently, and by joined I mean started working at the company to hopefully improve the experience for all of you. But I've been a real estate investor for a number of years and aware of the platform for much longer than that.

One thing that's always been at the back of my mind about this community and product, why the name Bigger Pockets? What about that resonates with you all? I understand some of the history in the way back about the existing forum, actors, and such. But past that, how do you think about the name today?

When I meet people who sound interested in real estate investing, I tell them about Bigger Pockets. There is a great development funnel for anyone who goes down the rabbit hole. Videos, forum, books, meetups. Nobody has ever asked me what the name means. Bigger Pockets is two boring words, maybe that's what makes it perfect since real estate is slow and boring (mostly).

Some name suggestions:

- Broke Pockets, during tax season.

- Bounced Payments, around the first of the month.

- Broken Promises, shoutout to the contractors.

- Bigger Problems, for commercial real estate investors.

- Busted Pipes, for everyone's first deal.

This is such a fun question. I recently spoke with Josh Dorkin but we didn't end up talking about this, although it would have been a great question for him. In an interview, he said the term came from gangsters in movies all having extra large pockets to hold all their cash. And the idea of real estate investing being the ethical and legal way to full those bigger pockets.

Now, the term for me has become synonymous with real estate investing.

I really liked the old days of Biggerpockets when it was about the real estate investor.I enjoyed the old biggerpockets podcasts when it was a genuine conversation between the host and the real estate investor. It was a conversation.Nowadays, a lot of the podcasts are either news episodes or a guest who is an executive of some large firm like fundrise.To me, the platform seems too corporate.
