2020 Goals- What are your plans for the new year and Decade?

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone has had a great holiday season up to this point and continue to do so up through the new year. As I sit here and reflect about accomplishments, people I’ve met, and all things that have happened in the past year I can honestly say I never would have imagined I’d be where I am now. Of everyone I have connected with one common denominator of their success has been the importance of having and writing down clear goals and having a clear vision of the future you want to have. Something that helped me tremendously was the BP Intention Journal. I’ve always written goals down however it wasn’t until this journal that I started being intentional about daily tasks and goals to make sure I’m being productive as opposed to simply busy

This year I’ve come up with two separate lists of goals for the year, one of which being personal goals and the other being real estate/ business goals. With that being said I want to list a few of my real estate goals for 2020:

1.) Purchase a duplex or a SFH we can convert into 2 units here in Fort Wayne, IN to househack for the next year or two. My future fiancé (she doesn't know when I'll be proposing this spring :) ) and I have sat down and come up with our goals for the year and decided this would be a great way to lower our expenses as we save up some more capital for both of our business endeavors.

2.) Read atleast 30 books. I hadn’t thought to read more this year until October of this year and was able to get through 12 so I figured why not aim for one a week? A quote I admire is “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

3.) Help Syndicate/ Raise capital for 3 deals with partners. This coincides with a goal I have listed below with respect to building relationships with private lenders and passive investors.

4.) Build relationships with atleast 5 Private lenders/ passive investors. I will continue to strive to build meaningful relationships with other investors. I look forward to connecting with other like-minded individuals over the course of the next year and if possible helping one another get one step closer to our goals.

5.) Help 10 people reach one of their goals this year whether it be a personal goal, financial goal, or real estate goal. I believe having someone to help hold you accountable to your goals is incredible and can inspire you both. Any chance I can help add purposeful value to others, I gladly will and look forward to it!

This past year has been entertaining and full of surprises and continued clarity. I’m excited to start the new year off and get the ball rolling early in the new decade! What are some of your goals for the next year whether it be growing your current portfolio, transitioning from SF to MF, or learning how to make your business more efficient?

I’m interested to hear some of your goals as well!  @Yonah Weiss @John Casmon @Michael Ealy @Michinori Kaneko @Felipe Mejia @Danny Randazzo @Chris Salerno @Ben Grotzke @Abel Curiel

my goal is to still be alive at the end of the decade  first and foremost..

keep refining what we are doing .. open up a new market for new builds  maybe more than one.

keep looking for those gems in the path of progress for the big pay days.

    Real Estate Related Goals

    • Buy at least one BRRR deal in 2020.
    • More closely manage my property manager and require more detailed monthly reports.
    • Attend REIA meetings more often.

    Financial Goals

    • Bulk savings up more after using some on personal home renovations via continuing to reimburse myself with house-hacking income.
    • Ensure my budget is still up-to-date after some up-coming financial changes.
    • Continue to pay extra towards principle on primary house. Only about 8 years left of a mortgage we started in 2009!

    Personal Goals

    • Work towards furthering my SCUBA certifications such as Public Saftey Diver and begin Technical Diving and Cave Diving training.
    • Try to control the amount of planned travel for 2021 since I already have several trips set for 2020.
    • But when I do plan travel, begin traveling to further-away locations such as Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and similar options.
    • Read more books...well, Audibles. :-)
    • Push harder to relocate full-time to Florida. First step of that was completed by renovating my personal home so it's ready to become a rental.

These are amazing goals @Andre Jernigan!

I am not one for publicizing goals, I like to keep things close to my heart, and I celebrate accomplishing the goals quietly as well :)

My goal is to connect people, and I try to make at least one connection a day. In 2019 I made well over 500 connections. Probably more, but I don't track them. Helping people is just something I love to do, and I believe the positive energy that is created by looking to help others comes back 10-fold.

Looking forward to connecting more with you as well Andre! Good luck crushing your goals!

First and foremost you’ve got a good point, I feel like many of us take waking up the next day for granted.

Sounds to me like you’ve already got your plans in place for the year. I haven’t taken the time to look into new builds so I’ll definitely be following to see if I can’t learn something new

Wow this is incredible, it’s going to be a great year! Talk about having a clear vision of what you want to do for the year! With respect to your property manager, have you come up with the reports you’d like them to have for you?

I’ve come to believe that house hacking is the 8th wonder of the world. Keep on with that principal pay down that’s awesome in 10 years!

Being in the middle of Indiana I must admit I have never thought to get a SCUBA certification, that’s certainly unique lol. As far as traveling for this year, is there a destination you’re looking forward to the most?

I completely respect that idea! It’s part of why I decided to share only  a part of my lists :)

If you ask me, connecting people is something that you’re pretty good at. As a matter of fact I can see you doubling your goal this year! You’re right though in my opinion. Looking to help others and constantly bringing positive energy to the world is rewarding in its own way.

I too look forward to connecting with you more here in the new year and will take time to guess when to silently celebrate you crushing your goals as well!

    Thanks Andre!

For the PM reports, I have a few examples of other monthly reports to show them. Sometimes, though, it's as simple as needing them to be more consistent with details such as accurately notating which month a rental payment is for when from a late tenant so I can more quickly/easily understand it. Another example is that I'd like them to seperate rental income from court fees reimbursement from tenants. Right now, they just put it all together, and again, it'd just be easier for me to quickly understand if everything was more itemized. I spend too much time trying to fully understand them as is! They've always worked with me very well, so I'm not at a point that I should just look for another PM.

Yes! House hacking is such an amazing tactic to leverage!

I love diving. I didn't used to. I had a scary incident years ago, but I jumped back in the water and am now more confident and better than ever before. I think that incident actually taught me a bit about myself in stressful situations and how to handle it if it happened again. (I had a situation where I was not getting enough air from my equipment at a deep depth, and it caused my body to hyperventilate, which further didn't help my situation but I obviously made it out fine.)

I really look forward to seeing Alaska this year finally. I also really look forward to going to the island of Utila, Honduras to dive looking for Whale Sharks and help researchers in their studies on these amazing animals.

    Happy new year!

     Awesome goals Andre!

    Some of my goals are:

    1. Acquire $150M worth of hotels

    2. Acquire $150M worth of apartments in A/B areas

In 2019, I've acquired close to $100M worth of real estate (mostly apartments). So in 2020, I will strive to 3x it. Not quite 10x as Grant Cardone would say.

    3. Launch my book and giveaway 100,000 copies and in the process change some people's lives

    4. Experience skydiving and live 😁

    5. Become even healthier - will try for 30 days to go vegan and not drink any alcohol. Among all my goals, this is probably the toughest.

And do all the above while attending and coaching all my kids' sports, be on vacation 30 days out of the year and have time for family and our church (as I've done this year).

Thanks for the tag @Andre Jernigan. I mentioned a little in the FW REIA page too, but my RE goal for next year is to find 6-8 more properties that cashflows better. This year (2019) i met my goal of reaching 10 properties. However, the profitability and cashflow from it was way under what I have planed for or anticipated. This was due to me over relying on others inputs and not doing sufficient diligence on my own to research local rental rates, ARVs, and rehab costs. I assumed a local professionals would be more knowledgeable than I am about these things so I lacked my own diligence. Here are my RE goal for this year:

6-8 better cash flowing properties (All aimed to be BRRRR or at least close to it).

Try out other property managers (I have already started trying out 2 others, but i want to try 1 or 2 more, give them like a property or 2 to them).

Try to be less involved. The goal here is to be passive if possible, but i think i worry about too much small details (but then again, maybe this is needed especially in the beginning).

Continue to build out my team.  I have a team, i just need to find more team members so i can scale faster.  I want to reach 200 properties in 10 years, and i will not reach that with just my current team.

On non-RE side, my daughter is going to be 3 and we are going to put her in a daycare, but schools in NY are so expensive (looking at $1500-$1600 a MONTH or possibly even more). While my expenses will be skyrocketing, I also recently realized that because I've been focusing too much on the future I've been giving too much stress to my wife about not spending money even while she is out with our daughter and her friends. So I need to find a better balance between being able to enjoy what we have today, while trying to expand my portfolio. I think BRRRR is the key here.

Finally, ever since i had my daughter, i've had VERY minimal exercise. My workplace recently had a full renovation and has a really nice gym.  my goal is to at least workout 2-3 days a week (which will be very tough for me as i am not a morning person).

Hope we both have a productive year ahead of us, and best of luck to achieve all your goals :)

For 2020 my goal is make the transition into flipping. That will become the source of funding for my buy and holds. After finishing my first out of state BRRRR, I don't believe in the strategies ability to scale quickly.

My goal for the decade is to create $10,000 a month of net income from buy and hold investing.

5.) Help 10 people reach one of their goals this year whether it be a personal goal, financial goal, or real estate goal. I believe having someone to help hold you accountable to your goals is incredible and can inspire you both. Any chance I can help add purposeful value to others, I gladly will and look forward to it!

     Great post Andre!

I'm pumped for you and your future wife. Its one thing to hit our goals but it brings another level of satisfaction to do so along the person you've chosen to spend your life with. Many blessings to you both!

I'll follow up what Chris mentioned- I'd be happy to help you hit your goals as well.

As a personal goal, make it to the gym 260 days this year.

As a business goal, help 50 new investors close on their first investment in NY and around the U.S.

Got it. It sounds like it’s a few small organizational things That can be fixed easily with respect to the PM reports. The extra organization should help make things more efficient for you as well!

Oh wow, that does sound like a rather scary situation. It’s amazing what all we find out about ourselves in stressful situations like that isn’t it? I’m glad that you have conquered that fear and find the amount of joy you do in it now.

You have quite the year of traveling don’t you?! I have a good friend that lived in Alaska for a summer and said that it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever been. I’m thinking with the places you’re going, you’ll have a tough time choosing which place you enjoyed most!

I hope you have a great New Year’s and I’m sure you’ll crush your goals in 2020!!

    @Andre Jernigan

Happy New Year readers (a little early) and thanks Andre for keep us track on this night of all nights. This is what I really like about BP and its members, people are always focused on their success, future goals, and making others better. My wife and I worked all during 2019 to ensure our credit was strong/clear, our savings are to our liking (as best we can), we educated ourselves on/off BP and we built a team that can help us grow and succeed in 2020.

Our number one goal for 2020 is to purchase at least two properties using the BRRRR method with the guidance of our investor and realtor/PM. We have been lucky enough to find people willing to teach a couple of novices how to make money as well as build a business of our own for sustainable income. I hope two isn't shooting too low, however, I also hope it isn't too high for our first year! We have one rental now, but do not count it towards a portfolio because we only break even with it, but have learned from it. We were ordered to move by the Air Force and really did not have time to sale it, so we got a PM and rented it. Therefore, with the purchase of properties in 2020, our second goal is for positive cashflow. We not only want to learn the business, we also want to reap its benefits in order to grow.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun night! Good luck with all your goals, whatever they may be.

I hope everyone on here tonight or whenever you are reading this, will be successful in their goals for 2020.

Sounds like a big year planned for you! I’m assuming you’ve got some areas in mind for both hotels and apartments?

I’ll be looking forward to buying your book when it comes out! I’m sure the I formation in it will be more than enough time change the lives of those who read it. Talk about adding a massive amount of value!

I have a few friends who have skydived multiple times and they said it’s quite the experience so you’ll certainly have a blast! 😁

Spending time with family is invaluable. If you were good this past year on i’ll I say keep going strong with it. Do you already have destinations planned for your month of vacation for the year?

I know you’re going to crush those goals this year, may even surprise yourself. The law of Bamboo is real 😉 I look forward to staying connected with you this year!

Hey no problem! I’ll have to go check out the FWREIA page as well. 10 properties in one year was pretty good. Are you still looking to invest in the Fort Wayne area or are you looking to expand into other markets as well? And is there a Minimum amount of cash flow you’re looking for?

Being as passive as possible is something that I feel a number of investors are looking to do. I think the first thing to do is sit down and think about how to create a team and where to start with. I believe you absolutely can reach 200 properties in ten years. Are you looking to stay strictly with SFH are have you thought about going into multifamily as well?

A brand new gym at work sounds like the perfect opportunity! The hardest part about waking up (Just like everything that’s worth it 😉) is just getting started. Afterwards you’ll realize how much more productive you feel!

Here’s to a great 2020 and even better decade! I will certainly be in touch! Happy New Year!

Hey Jonathan! I think these are awesome because you’re setting up a system that can be replicated. You now have some knowledge and ability to scale in the way that you want to. Being able to have a goal set at the beginning of the decade is awesome! It makes it so much easier to track over the course of time. You might even surprise yourself and reach that goal much sooner than you think!

Best of luck to you, I know you’ll crush it! Happy New Year!

Good afternoon and Happy New Year Abel! I appreciate it! It is a satisfaction and experience that certainly is one of a kind.

I’m glad that you gave a number of times to make it to the gym this year. I was reading an article about goal setting and it mentioned something año. Setting a specific number of times to do something in a year instead of a general “3 times a week.” Is this your first year of trying that?

Helping 50 first time investors sounds amazing! We’re you thinking about using the 3 new technology systems to help reach that goal?

    Happy New Year Abel!
