Bandit Signs???

Question

Hello everyone - first of all - thanks to all the veterans and those serving our country... MUCH LOVE!!!!

So the county offices are closed today and I'm super eager to hear if anyone knows if bandit signs are allowed in Washoe County, Nevada &/or Douglas County Nevada?

Do you have to check with each city as well? or just county?

I apologize in advance if someone has already answered these questions somewhere in the history of the forums... thanks for any feedback.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone ending up in front of a judge for putting out road-side signs. Some have been fined, but it was a not a court case.

I've noticed that a lot of things are "not allowed", yet they are common, even expected practice.

For example, companies have discovered that they can cite the pay of their long-time employees as a reason to let them go, even though those folks are older. As long they cite economic reasons for discharge and not their age, the law won't go after them.

Is it legal? Absolutely not - EEO clearly states that discrimination on the basis of age in hiring - or firing! - is a violation.

Is it allowed? Absolutely - every day of the week!

@Mike Cumbie laws allow whatever is locally agreed upon.  Many have all sorts of exceptions for various sorts of signs under a variety of circumstances.  Political signs are almost always allowed, though they often have limitations, too.  Laws are nothing more than a common agreement among a group of people on how to behave.  They can be and frequently are changed.  My city changed a law about real estate development projects last week.

But when you're breaking the law, asking for forgiveness may involve standing in front of a judge.   Why may not be interested in forgiveness.  My view is that if they are forbidden in your locale and you put them up anyway, you are asking for trouble.

Search for the municipal and county codes.  Many are online.  Not always easy to interpret, but you can usually figure it out with some study.

Yes, you will need to check each city where you post signs.  If they allowed by the city, you're probably OK.  If they're not covered by the city, check the county.  Counties sometimes do have sign ordinances, but more commonly these are imposed by cities.

Its a very good bet these are not allowed.  They almost never are, if the city or county do have sign ordinances.  Typically these ordinances (and I've looked at a number of them, since this topic comes up here frequently) ban all signs.   Then they have a series of types of allowed signs and when and where they're allowed.  For example, very common to allow real estate signs advertising a property for sale or rent that are posted at the property.  They also commonly allow "open house" directional signs for the time period of the open house and a few hours before.  But I've never seen an ordinance that has an exception that would allow bandit signs.  Some areas don't have sign ordinances at all.  That's really what you're looking for.

Just odd that I keep hearing/reading about using bandit signs as one of the top ways to get new leads - only to Find out that no one ever really is allowed to use them?

One possible way to determine the local attitudes on such signs is to watch for them in your area.

Typically, you'll see them appear late afternoon or evening on a Friday. The "sign police" usually take weekends off. Some folks pick up their own signs, others leave them for the local agencies to collect and dispose of them.

Where I am, the housing developers hire folks to put their signs out on Friday evenings and pick them up Sunday evening. "Professional" bandit signs, if you will... "New ranch homes from the low $200's", for example, usually with a directional arrow.

A lot of folks take the attitude that forgiveness is often easier to get than permission.

Remember to use an untraceable phone number... (Google voice, etc.)
