How About More Editing Abilites?

Question

I've double clicked a couple of times on the forum and had posts entered twice. I'd like to be able to delete one of those. Or suppose we post something and decide later it was really a dumb thing to post and want to delete it? I think we should be able to. And I've mentioned before that not being able to edit the title of the posts is bothersome. Any chance we can change that?

The accidential double posts result in a notification and are deleted by a moderator.

Editing is limited in order to avoid post destruction.  We have had incidents where a poster decided they didn't like what they had said in posts and edited all their posts.  That resulted in a thread that was meaningless.

I belong to many forums and they have everything from unlimited editing to no editing at all.  I know I have made a post, then went off reading other posts, came back to my post as someone has answered it, and saw a word spelled wrong or maybe a grammatically incorrect sentence.  Yes, we can proof read, but sometimes we miss something doing a proof read.

Personally, I would like to see 20 minutes.  For those of us who post at work, we get phone calls, visits from the boss, have to make a bio break run, and get other interruptions.  Ten minutes goes by pretty quick while reading Sports Illustrated in the rest room.

Just something to think about.

I don't recall taking leave of my senses long enough to post anything on here I don't want others to read. It was just more of an example. For example, you post something that is erroneous and then later find proof to the contrary. But editing the title would be a big plus. I type pretty quickly most times and though I am relatively accurate, I do have a tendency to strike several keys at a time that causes typos and I hate spelling errors. Just a quirk of mine.

After 10 minutes, you can add an amendment to ANY forum post that you've made, where you can do exactly what you're talking about. So, if you made a mistake, or needed to update some piece of info, you can do that at any point.

Most reputable websites that I'm familiar with all have a limited editing period.  Some have one as short as 3 minutes, while others have a period as long as 15.  We're currently set at 10 minutes, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

That said, I do believe that a user should be able to edit their post title as well when editing a post, so we will look into making that possible.

Otherwise, I always tell people to review what you wrote (we do have a preview option when creating a post) to be sure that you are happy with it before posting it, because once you do, that's it . . . it is out there for the world to see.

Ten minutes is plenty of time to look over something you wrote for a fix.

What they teach in school is, "if you don't want anyone to read it, then don't post it online;  always make sure you read and re-read what you write before pushing the submit button"

I wholeheartedly agree!  Not having a longer edit period is hurting the quality of the posts on BP!
