Truebooks CPA - Feedback

Ricardo Garcia
Posted

Hi all,

You must listen to podcast #689, The #1 Real Estate Tax Loophole, with Matt Bontrager. I was impressed with the information shared by Matt. It was easy to understand and to the point. I Googled Truebooks reviews, but there is not much information about Truebooks CPAs. I also searched the forums and found one post with seven replies mentioning Truebooks.

Is anyone here at BiggerPockets using Truebooks services like Tax Advisor?

Thank you,

Ricardo

    Hi Everyone!

Happy to help with any questions. Quick overview of our firm is three components. Tax Preparation, Tax Advisory, Accounting. All fixed fee with out of scope offerings as well. Such as accounting clean-ups, KPI analysis, etc.

Hello @Matt Bontrager I currently have a tax file open with your company. I provided all info by the deadline I was given. I was then informed that my file was in queue to be assigned to a tax preparer on March 12th. After inquiring several times if a tax preparer has been assigned, on April 12th I was notified someone was assigned.

I was then told an extension will be filed.

I asked the tax preparer several times after he was assigned for a status update. Each time the response was "Unfortunately I cannot provide an exact estimate at this time for the date of completion". That message was on May 23rd, it is now nearly 2 months later (July 19th) and I still have heard nothing. If someone has been assigned, why would it take more than 2 months for them to complete the return? I have a pretty straight forward return with a W-2 and a K-1 from an LLC.

I will assume positive intent here that this is not the experience you intend for your customers. My experience so far has made me regret my decision for TrueBooks to file my return. This year will be the most I have paid for my taxes to be prepared, and the only year where I will be filing with an extension (and added stress).

To be fair and objective with my feedback, the upfront consultation process went well. Everyone I spoke with was knowledgeable and pleasant. The communication was prompt. However, once my deposit was paid and I submitted my files, that’s where the experience degraded.

Based on my experience, I would caution others to receive services from TrueBooks.

My question is: When will my taxes be filed? May you please look into this for me? Thanks!

I had a complimentary call with one of their consultants last week and it was reassuring. But I am still shopping before making up my mind. I was wondering if anyone here actually work/ed with them.

I’m in the same boat. Used them for 2021 taxes, signed to use them again at the end of 2022. During 2022 I had multiple meetings with one of their CPA advisors and gave them access to QuickBooks and Payroll platforms. Completed the information multiple times and then they asked me to send copies of Accounting reports despite having access. They filed an extension and here it is nearly September of the next year and I’m still not filed for 2022.
My experience is that you pretty much always have to file an extension with them as your CPA and the communication is pretty terrible.

Just trying to get some fairly simple taxes filed for myself and my business that I met with them about throughout 2022. Then, 2023 I’ve had zero meetings or communications about business and what to do.
    The service went downhill. Fast!

That’s super frustrating Kyle! I hope you get things wrapped up soon. I did hear back from TrueBooks and they had my return ready for me to review, but there was a tax credit missing, so we’re back to waiting for them to make corrections 😫

Matt, Still haven’t gotten mine done and the business extension only goes still Sept 15th if I’ve been informed correctly. Crazy that we’re over 9 months into the year and I haven’t gotten these files when your team has access to QuickBooks, Gusto (my payroll platform), and I met with an advisor on my tax plan all last year.

Looks like you’re just covering your bases with generic responses to us though.

Good luck with keeping any paying customers you have left. I truly hope you give them better service and do wish you well.

     Hi Kyle,

I'm trying to reach out as it's the right thing to do and I didn't see these until today. I also sent you an email to discuss.

Hey guys im going to copy paste my review of truebooks from the thread i just posted. These guys suck and I encourage you to make google reviews to save people from the same fate.

Hi Kyle! Do you mind sharing your new cpa info?

I hired True Books August 1st, 2022 to help me navigate taxes as a small business owner and multiple property owner.

Its now Sept 2nd, 2023 and they do not have my taxes done. I had given them all of my documents in Feb 2023 and they 'filed an extension for me' since my taxes would not be ready in time. They did not make me aware of the daily compounding interest this would cost me. Mind you - I had all the docs to them in Feb 2023.

From start of May onwards I email them every week or two. Every response is "We will have it ready by Friday" or "I've sent it on to the preparer"

July 2023 I get my Business taxes done- and they were all wrong. (I did not realize this until I hired another firm to fix everything truebooks had "helped me with")

Mid August 2023 - I get an email "Your taxes are done". They say I owe about double what they had said i would owe, Plus fines from the extension. Also that i need to prepay for next year. Working with these people for a year they never told me there are more fines for not prepaying.

After the above I reach out to Matt Bontrager (Co-Owner) and have a chat with him where he tries to gaslight me into this all being my fault. He says he will go back and add my deductions (they didn't input them, somehow also my fault??). Its been 9 days since i spoke to him about this, still no progress on taxes.

I hired a new firm 2 days after speaking with Matt Bontrager, gave them the same documents that True Books had. Instead of giving me excuses, brushing me off, ect ect, my taxes were done in 3 days.

My tax liability went down by 10k with my deductions (now finally added) and my new CPA charged me $1300 for my business, personal and WALKING ME THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS.

True Books charged me $6500 to get to this point (and wanted another $1500 for the final leg) to basically have me rack up fines, brush me off and gaslight me as if this is the norm.

I'm writing this review as I wish someone had written it for me. 0/5 stars.

The only thing True Books got done in a timely matter was the cashing of my checks.

Sorry! New to this platform and my response posted in the wrong spot. Kyle, do you mind sharing your new cpa info.

    Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I was going to checkout Truebooks and will not because of only negative feedback from you.

You saved me from one poor decision.

Hey Matt, let me guess - all of these people are the problem as well right?

PSA : Don't hire TRUEBOOKS they will cash your check and leave you high and dry.

No sir, just you unfortunately. Luckily they’re being truthful. You know what was given to you, be thruthful about it like you were on our phone call.

I may not get my $6,500 back but saving you from the same fate is the second best thing.

Luckily for people like you, you can post whatever you want on the internet. We both know you’re lying about what was given to you. Multiple calls, deliverables, and you chose to do nothing, telling me “I forgot”, and now it’s all us, lol.

Cheers Kyle, happy investing and tax saving!

I was really excited to use Truebooks when we first hear of them.  They sounded very promising and seem like they was right for the job, so we hired them to do our 2022 tax and to help do our tax planning for 2023.  Soon after the start of the new year of 2022 and when tax season started getting busy, their quality of communication and response time start to degraded extremely bad.  Also I was very disappointing that even thought we provided our tax information to our CPA a month before the tax deadline we still had file an extension for our tax.  We worked so hard to provide that all the information the CPA need and wanted and at the end it was wasted of our time and effort.  On top of the extension, we had to continuously ask over and over, and over for updates.  It was extremely painful.  Worst part, we missed many opportunity during this time.

I paid thousand of dollars to do tax planning and I got two meeting so far with not tax planning, just chatting.  I would not recommend them.

    Hi Joe

I have to lead with saying I’m sorry. This tax season was brutal. We could have done a better job here to provide a quicker turnaround. To help avoid this we’re planning on giving clients the option going forward to let us know if they’d like to be filed early and we will adjust document deadlines accordingly. I’m trying as hard as I can to make it right for anyone that had a poor experience.

Regarding advisory work, I see your tax planning documents and will follow up separately to see how things are being implemented. I see 3x and 4x tax savings on fees for the next 2 years and beyond.

You’re still set to meet with us for more planning so I’ll be sure to discuss this with your advisor to ensure we nail down what is needed.

    I’ve emailed you to help.
