Renewing lease with tenant from previous owner

Jay Chin
Posted

Hi all!

I recently purchased a duplex and am renting out one side to a tenant that came with the duplex. She has had a year long lease then another year long lease renewal addendum with the old landlord. I am wondering if I need/should draft up a whole new lease agreement or if I should simply use the old renewal addendum (i would remake the document as I only have a picture).

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Quote from @Jay Chin:

You can stick with the original lease, but make sure it covers what you want it to, it complies with current law, you understand it completely, and you are capable of enforcing it. If not, then it's time to update.

BiggerPockets has a Lease Agreement Package under "TOOLS" at the top of your screen. $100 for a lease and several other documents (FREE FOR PRO MEMBERS!) written by investors and attorney-approved for your state. It's better than what you'll get from most attorneys and what you'll find on the internet.
