Owning your own business can be incredibly rewarding, exciting and stressful, often all at the same time. In the beginning, you’re firing on all cylinders, running constantly as you work to gain clients, find the next deal, sell products or services and move your business through startup. Often you are doing many, if not all the tasks yourself trying to keep up while working towards exponential growth. The endorphins fueling you are not sustainable for the long haul and you can begin to tire or burn out.
Recognize the Mundane
Recognize that you or your business is in a rut, or what I call a mundane phase; the first step is awareness. Oftentimes, it happens so gradually that we miss or don’t recognize it.
You’ve worked hard hiring talented people, setting up your systems, and your business almost seems to be running on autopilot. This often happens after quick massive growth or the “hockey stick” phase. This can be a challenging time for business owners, especially ones that are easily distracted by the next “big” thing. Starting a new product line or venture is exciting, but pushing through the mundane to continue building and growing may be harder but more rewarding.
For some it occurs when you’ve had a long stretch of average growth. Your business is steady with no huge wins or losses. You become satisfied, bored or indifferent. Maybe you’ve lost the initial passion that ignited you when you first began your business.
Keep in mind that the leader’s energy sets the pace for everyone else. When you begin to notice your team starting to lag, reflect on yourself. How are you conducting yourself in your business, and identify your own possible rut. Reevaluate what’s motivating you.
Keep Pushing Through
Don’t give in! Keep on moving! Don’t settle for the status quo! It’s natural for businesses to fluctuate as they grow from infancy to maturity and go through periods of rapid growth followed by leveling out.
Accepting status quo leads to eventual decline, through slowly fizzling out, or from a competitor overtaking your business. Keep your eyes fixed on your goals to keep on course.
Reset Your Goals to Kick the Rut
Refuel your momentum. Begin by dreaming and planning your future. Schedule designated times per day or week to brainstorm. Start getting excited about the possibilities again! Make sure that you are thinking BIG when you are setting your new goals. Stretch your mind and reach to set a big hairy audacious goal (BHAG). This will bring new energy and enthusiasm into your business. Endorphins and desire are powerful drivers for most entrepreneurs.
Strategically Plan Your Next Move
This may be the time to pivot or add an additional business stream of revenue by creating a new product or service. Also take time to prepare for the upcoming “hockey stick” phase. It is an important time to audit your systems and processes, as they may need to be revamped or become obsolete at a higher level of volume and business. Have the leadership and process in place for rapid hires, such as recruiting, training and developing. Also, make sure your systems are scalable. The time to address these things is now to ensure a more seamless transition through rapid growth.
Level up
Audit who is in your circle of influence. Make sure to surround yourself with people better than yourself. Join an accountability group, attend seminars and read self-development books or industry specific books to hone your skills.
Take massive action. You control your success. This is your time! Make it happen!
