Self directed IRA means you can partake in your own future so that you are not limited by it. Even if one has an etrade account they can only meddle with what’s available in the stock market. With a self directed IRA people can own real estate, gold, stocks and many more. You can invest in a friends’ business or a family business. The best thing about self directed retirement accounts is that you can put money in without being taxed. Only stipulation is that money needs to stay in the account. All the gain needs to stay in the retirement account. 

You can even create a private family banking system within the IRA account. People can lend people their IRA money and the gain will go to the account. You can literally charge interest on your money, realize a profit and save it for retirement. You can invest and become an equity partner instead of lending and becoming a debt partner. And all this is before taxes which means you are not being taxed.
