Market Research - How to pull data from US Census GOV (new portal)

Motivation:

Here was my motivation with going through this approach and sharing the same with you! Hopefully you find it as useful as I did.

Problem:

There are some websites that give good analytics and pictorial representation of data on Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Markets.

The issue I personally faced was that the websites states that the data was accumulated from "multiple sources" and many times those multiple sources were not mentioned on the websites. Makes me wonder if that data is relevant enough or not.

In addition, when I collected data and compared from various websites, the data at times did not match, which grew into more frustration.

My Solution:

  1. Go directly to US census to get Market Analysis data
  2. Get the data that I would like to track for the Market Analysis
  3. Put that data in excel so that I can track over a period of Time

I am going to include information below below, how to get data easily from the US census website.

This is directly from US census (this is the new one - they will deprecate the old one).

There are multiple ways you can search, but I find this the easiest (and concrete):

Steps performed:

* Type in the city, state, and "DP"

Normal 1560352767 Census1

* This brings up the Profile table page. Select the All tab, and first table

Normal 1560352791 Census2

* This brings up the actual Tables and you can select anything from the left pane, and select the Filter to filter any data you want

Normal 1560352834 Census3

The information is amazing and at times a bit overwhelming. You can pickup the benchmarks you want and maintain an excel sheet for the markets you are interested to invest in.

Hope this information helps! Feel free to reach out to me if you need any help or have questions.

Cheers,

Dhruv Anand
