What You Need to Know About Property Taxes (San Antonio, TX)

Hi there! Today I'm going to be talking about a topic very near and dear to my heart - preparing to protest your property taxes. Here in Texas, property taxes can get pretty darn high, so it is important to protest them each year to keep your tax bill low. Watch my YouTube video or read on to learn what you need to look out for and how to get started.

Paperwork

If you own property in Bexar County or San Antonio, be on the lookout for your Notice of Appraised Value in the mail any day now. This notice has your PIN number you will need to login to the online system to put in your property tax protest.

In 2021, this is going to be REALLY IMPORTANT! Over the past year, the real estate market has gone bonkers ... we're talking double-digit appreciation. If the value of your home goes up, that means taxes will go up. I don't know many people who can afford a 10-20% spike in property taxes this year. So get ready to protest. Watch my video series, which gives you a step-by-step guide on how to do this in Bexar County. Reach out to me for comps or help - last year I helped dozens of people protest their taxes and save money. I plan to do the same again this year, so if you need my help you can fill out my form at protest.cassievillela.com or message me here on BiggerPockets

Homestead Exemption

If you bought a house last year, the deadline is coming. You have to get your form in by the end of this month in order to claim Homestead exemption on your property taxes. Don't let this deadline pass - get your form in today! Here is the link to form that you can do yourself for free. Everyone in Texas gets one homestead exemption for the place they live, so you need to claim this.

A note: When you first buy a house, you get attacked with so much junk mail. One of these you might see is companies trying to get you to pay them to submit the homestead exemption form for you. You don't need to pay them because you can do this FOR FREE by yourself. These notices look really official, so it is totally easy to fall for this.
