Finding your Ignition Point

Rev Up your Engine. Reviving productivity means finding a way to light a fire.

No matter where you are along your investing career we all face challenges: Burn Out, Frustration, Discouragement, & Wilting Motivation. Not only that, this business needs focus and a plan. It is easy to get disengaged when these challenges arise. These challenges make it hard for you to keep moving forward and often being resilient becomes too hard and you want to give up. Additionally, regardless if you’re a baby boomer or a twenty something you are probably eager to have your internal fire stoked. You may have to create your own “retention culture.” You’ll have to keep yourself engaged and inspired when a problem arises.

Here are some great best practices to keep your Real Estate Fire Burning…

1. Build Momentum. Find out what is going to motivate you. Is it because your Why is burning deep inside you? Is it because you want to fulfill all those dreams you have? Do you have the right role models to follow? Are you following the path that’s been paved for you by others? You need to be fully engaged and committed to this venture. You have to really live the successes and grow from your failures. Give yourself a rating at the end of each day or end of each week. 5 – you crushed it, 1 – you lost focus and didn’t do what you said you would. Don’t punish yourself, but strive to get better each week.

2. Remember the Personal Touches. One of the biggest things with success is good networking. Networking is most successful when there’s trust. Often to create trust you need to open yourself up to others and to opportunities to where the relationship can go. Be willing to connect. You have to be willing to share your own humanness. Be aware of your own personal and professional challenges. Another small way to create relationships is to simply say Thank You! Thank those that have helped inspire you. Thank your realtor for their time and efforts. I always say that the saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” is crap. A lunch can get you endless results. Buy your realtor lunch or coffee. Get a gift card for your contractor. Or just a simple hand written thank you can go a long ways.

3. Learn What Works by Asking. Remember the story that Dean told awhile back, You need to get to the other side of the forest, so you dive in and fight your way across clawing and scratching for each step forward. Finally, you bust through to the other side. Then you look over and someone is standing there say, “Hey, you know there is a path right over here.” Trust me there’s a path. Follow the wisdoms that are on this site, the contributions, the life coaching and most of all Ask the Right Questions! Ask Them!!!! Also, have a solid conversation with yourself. Ask, what do I need, what do I want. What do I have to do to reach my dreams!

4. Own Your Actions. Accountability is one of the biggest challenges that we face. Not only that, we have to take ownership for what we do. Are you giving reasons or excuses for why you are not where you want to be? Are you blaming others and circumstances? Are you taking true ownership for where you are today, good or bad? Well, have that chat with yourself as well. Are you spending time moving yourself forward or are you making up excuses for your lack of progress? You need to own each day. You need to not only know what you need to do to be successful, but be willing to do whatever it takes, and actually do it!

5. Get in Sync. Do you ever feel just out of balance? Like things are spinning out of control. What is this Work Life Balance and really has anyone truly mastered it? I want you to work to align your dreams and passions along with your strengths. Do the things that you’re dreading or not as good at first. Number one that relieves a lot of stress and relieves a lot of weight from your shoulders. That will also free up time for you to focus on the things that you enjoy. After you’ve had some success look to hire people or partner with people that have skills that are not yours. Leverage their abilities to move you forward. Most of all Have some Fun along the way…

Which leads me to…How to start having some fun along the way….

Have you ever head that relationships that last the longest are with partners that make you laugh, well it’s true. Many other things can go in life, but humor is something that can keep you going year after year, but it has to be the right humor. Also, the best public speakers are often those that can make you laugh, yet still get the point across. Someone that can tell stories that have humor throughout, but deliver a solid message with the humorous examples. I still remember reading T. Harv Eker’s, Millionaire Mind. He gives an example about people who say they want more love and are concerned with making money. He suggest you go down to your local bank and ask to “Deposit some Love.” I actually did Laugh out Loud on that and 10+ years later it’s still with me.

Sometimes the person that needs to make you laugh, may be yourself. You may be the one to chuckle as you make a mistake. Maybe you’re afraid of making a call to a realtor….try creating a goofy imagery to relax you. Imagine the realtor reaching through the phone and poking you in the eyes – three stooges’ style. That cracks me up….now that’s not going to happen, so what’s the worst that could happen. Just make the call.

Creating humor in your life and real estate business will often drive creativity and productivity. The more fun you’re having the more you enjoy your work and it feels less like work. Not only that, humor can decrease hostility and tension with others, but improves your overall morale. I always say the more excited and enthusiastic you are about real estate the more you’ll attract others, including power team members, partners and even private money. Positive Energy is a Magnet.

Women often have more trouble using humor in their business and even personal life. Those that do, also default to a self-depreciating humor. That’s not going to drive your excitement, that’s going to keep re-enforcing that “I’m not good enough to do this” mentality. So man or woman, make sure you use humor, but make it the right humor!

Here are some great tips to incorporate humor into your life & real estate business:

1. Focus the Laughs on Yourself. Doing so helps humanize you in the eyes of others, thus increasing your likeability. It also reduces the chances of accidently hurting feelings.

2. Drop the Sarcasm. Remember, sarcasm is mean-spirited-ness masked as humor. If you think there’s even a chance you’ll wish you hadn’t said it, don’t.

3. Poke Fun Up, Not Down. Never make fun of anyone with less power than you, or focus on characteristics over which someone has no control, such as age, gender, ethnicity or weight.

4. Use Body Language. Don’t just light up your words. Be sure your face and body carry the same playful message. Keep your audience engaged and build up to the final payoff. And always leave them wanting more.

5. Situational Humor. My favorite humor is the use of experiences we’ve all had. The need to check your phone frequently. The urge to stand up and be the first off the plane. Things that we can all relate too, but don’t really hurt anyone’s feelings and we can laugh about ourselves.

In summary, a good sense of humor can almost always make real estate and life a lot more fun! Plus, it’s free and I love free. Not only that, it’s 100% recyclable.

Best of Success ~Andrea
