Why Getting Laid Off Could Be The Best Thing To Happen For You

Why do I make such a bold claim? Well, some people get so comfortable with their routine that they will probably never take action to change their lives even if they’re miserable in their current situation if it means taking any sort of serious risk.

Take for example me back in May 2018. I took a break from real estate and got a 9-5 job where I planned to have as my main source of income while I took time to learn more about real estate and make it my side hustle.

Why did I stay so long? Part of it was to repay a huge debt that I owed to someone important in my life, the other part was to have some stability in life during a time where I felt very distraught and lacked a lot of direction which led to poor decisions.

At first, I told myself that I would only stay for about a year so that I could figure things out. I planned out my next flip in my head; how I would have to find it and how it would be nearly impossible to manage such a project from my desk. Three and a half years passed by in total and it took a global pandemic to wake me up the day I was called into my boss’s office and told that there wouldn’t be enough work for me in the foreseeable future and that I would have to pack my belongings and clock out by the end of that day. I was in disbelief. I planned to build up my rental portfolio and “fire my boss” as they put it, but didn’t think I would be the one to be let go first! But truthfully I’m glad that it happened.

This is the type of thing that I realized long ago and I think a lot of people can relate to me on that and if you are reading this now, then I think that somewhere inside you feel the same. That’s not me saying you should quit your job tomorrow and jump head first into real estate or whatever your passion is. My advice is simply…

Lesson #9: Take Action Today

You should probably still keep your job if you have a lot of responsibilities like a mortgage to pay and people depending on you. Our situations are all different. I stayed at home so I had very few responsibilities or bills to pay when I was considering all of this. But what I’m saying is don’t become complacent in your situation, grinding and toiling away every day until suddenly your life passes you by and your desires and hopes never get realized. Take steps everyday to approach your goal. There are plenty of books out there you could read to help you with that. Like this book a mentor advised me to read, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller. Build out a list of things you could do to reach your end goal and work your way backwards. Do a few things each day that relate to that goal and eventually you’ll find success and get there. It’s a long journey, but it starts with the first step out of our comfort zones.

Anyway, thanks again for reading.
