House may blow down but these impact windows will still be in place!

We placed an order for custom cherry windows and doors for our beachside renovation.  Due to its location near the water, by code we need either shutters or impact windows.  I spent some time making inquiry on BiggerPockets as to what others have installed and why.

I got a quote for a PVC product, which while more inexpensive, didn't appeal to me. We were taking into account that this house was once on the historical register, and may return to it in the future, and wanted a wood interior to match the natural woods inside the property.

So, we had a big box store come out to measure, and we placed a special order for the Andersen Stormwatch coastal impact rated product.

The installation crew removed the old wooden shutters on the outside of the building, and the first couple of windows were taken out.

Unfortunately, the plaster inside the house had to be removed in spots to accommodate the “strapping,” or pieces of metal that anchor the window to the structural framing material of the house.  When the installation is complete, we will hire a plaster specialist to make repairs.

When we spoke with the local building inspector, he said that the rest of the house may blow down, but those windows would still be in place. Ha!
