Networking

This “so called” myth about networking and success is, in fact, no myth at all. Networking is key and has helped most of the big companies reach their goals and get to where they are now. How many times have you heard about something through word of mouth? You probably cannot even count because the number is too high. If you step back and take a look at Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media sites you will realize that networking is all around you. To get to those thousands of likes and followers you have on Facebook and Instagram, what did you have to do? If you promoted your website through your friends and acquaintances…you were networking. This blog is a perfect example of networking itself. So, is networking pointless or essential for success? Networking is essential for success because how can a company grow without an audience? No one will know you unless you make yourself known; and once you make that impression, success will be right around the corner.

How to achieve success through networking:

To achieve success we must all understand what success is first, as it can be defined in various ways depending on what one wants to accomplish. One definition in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame.” How do you start to achieve that? You can start by doing business with their friends. People want to do business with people who they either know, people who are friendly and trustworthy, and or people they feel comfortable with. The basis of your success should be built upon strong
connections. It just isn’t enough nowadays to be skilled at what you do. Although it is very important to be skillful, a lack of communication can limit you from greater opportunities. With the fierce competition out there in today’s markets, you really need to stand out.

In Jeffrey Gitomer’s The Little Black Book of Connections he mentions that the more people are attracted to you the more solid connections you will be able to make. Therefore, from time to time ask yourself “who knows me,” “do I know how to make connections,” and “who do I know?” Now, no networking is done without some form of risk. What do we mean? In this instance, risk means rejection. Do not let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game! Sometimes people will want to be your friend or take you up on your offer and sometimes people won’t. Keep in mind that 90% of success is just showing up!

Two other important things to keep in mind are your self image and the company’s reputation. It is important to make sure that you project a good self image in such a way that will breed others’ confidence in you. The ability to listen, engage, and look at individuals directly when speaking says a lot about one’s own confidence and self respect. If you are trying to build a good self image you can start by talking about someone other than yourself, being yourself, and showing interest in others before asking them to show interest in you. It is always good to be prepared as well, such as, knowing a little background info about the individuals or companies you are approaching or interacting with. Remember, people are generally judged from their first
appearance, meeting, introduction, etc. If you are perceived in a negative way, that can make its way back to the company or your business. Some finals tips we would like to share with you are “keep your word” and “the sooner you find something in common with a person the sooner the barriers will come down.” Networking isn’t difficult it just requires patience, effort, determination, and an open mind. If you can be your loving, unique self who is willing to try, people will better understand you and will be more willing to help. Just keep in mind that networking is a two way street and interest should be mutual and respectful.
