Get Your Home And Yard Ready For Spring

With thawing temperatures, our thoughts are turning toward longer days and warmer weather. A wide variety of things can be done both inside and outside your home in preparation for spring. Be definition, spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition that allows for a home to be thoroughly cleaned both inside and out. Below are the top spring cleaning tips to get your home and yard ready for the warm spring weather.

Get your Home and Yard Ready for Spring

Inside the Home:

  • De-clutter and deep clean rooms. Move beds, couches and other furniture to vacuum or dust underneath.
  • Flip your mattresses. Clean linens, pillows and curtains to rid of dust mites.
  • Change the batteries in smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and other sensors.
  • Organize kitchen cabinets and the pantry. Discard of food items that are past the expiration date.
  • Test and clean ceiling fans. Ceiling fans not only help generate air circulation, but they can also help reduce your energy bill.
  • If you haven’t had your AC tuned recently, it may be a good time before the summer rush. Filters should also be replaced to increase efficiency of the unit.
  • Clean out the garage. Chances are it gets filled with road grime falling off of vehicles parked in it. Not to mention all of the ‘stuff’ that we throw out in the garage to get out of the interior of the home. Now’s the time to organize and clean all of the clutter.
  • Drain any sediment from your water heater to ensure that it is operating at its peak efficiency.

Outside the Home:

  • Replace any burnt-out bulbs, clean the light fixtures and fan blades.
  • Spruce up your front door. Add a wreath, stain or repaint the front door and replace the worn out welcome mat.
  • Prune any dead branches and apply mulch to help keep moisture in and the area weed-free. Clear out any dead plants from garden beds. Start thinking about spring landscaping projects.
  • Tidy up. Clean off sidewalks, steps and porches. Touch up any missing paint and tighten any wobbly stair railings. Get patio furniture out of storage and clean each item.
  • Check gutters. Make sure they are clear of obstruction and any debris. Without proper drainage, gutters can cause a host of other problems resulting from water runoff. Crawl spaces and basements can be a source for the water to go into and further result in damage caused by mold and other potential issues. April showers may be on the way, so having gutters in good working condition is important.
  • Inspect your roof for any missing or damaged shingles. Also, check flashing around chimneys, air vents and skylights.
  • Wash windows. Inspect screens for any holes and put screens on windows if needed.
  • If you have a woodstove or fireplace, then the flue should be cleaned and the exterior of the chimney should be inspected for any signs of damage. Any remaining firewood leftover from the cold winter season should be moved away from the house and stored off the ground.
  • Examine outside faucets and hoses for any freeze damage.
  • Schedule a tune-up for any gas and battery powered lawn equipment. Cutting blades should be sharpened and ready for the grass cutting season.
  • Home siding and trim can become damaged from the harsh winter elements. If siding or trim has become rotten then replacing the damaged material will help in prolonging the life of your home’s exterior.

Even if it may still be a little cold outside, we can all easily get to work spring cleaning on the inside of a home.

Whether you just need to do general spring maintenance or get your home ready for the spring real estate market, a little effort can go a long way in caring for your home. We hope these home maintenance tips have helped you prepare to shed those winter blahs and get your home ready for spring!
