Create A Lasting Good Reputation

A few weeks back I had an admittedly frustrating phone call (I will preface this statement with the note that I have no hard feelings towards the person who called me, but towards their broker). Personally there was a little boost for my ego as well in that call. Someone I had never met in person called for help which was flattering.

The call was from someone I had briefly talked to online. They were stuck in a hole. Their closing date had arrived, lender pulled out and they were in a bind. They could still close on the home, but needed specialized funding and they needed it quick.

There were two things I could have done at the beginning of the call.

  • Tell them to go talk to their broker who should be able to help direct them
  • Open up my knowledge bank and give them the help they need

While admittedly frustrated that option 1 didn't happen for whatever reason, I chose option 2.

Taking the high road in these sorts of situation tends to boost your reputation for those contacts down the road. There may be no measurable way to see this, but the goal is to have someone think of you in a positive way which will lead to further and hopefully more beneficial inquiries. I’m not saying go out of your way to be overly helpful, but if time allows then do what you can within reason. Reputation goes a long way, so do what you can to improve and preserve it.
