Getting Involved Into Real Estate While Being Thousand Miles Away

Our previous podcast guest Matthew started telling us about his real estate journey when he was involved in single-family residences back in 2008 with his mother, they had a portfolio of about 10 single-family properties which he helped manage and unfortunately, it was kind of like a mom-and-pop organization it's like, "hey go run up grab that flier, look at it alright, let's put in the bid", they got a house and they didn't know that they didn't really run it as well as they could have and long story short they had to liquidate a bunch of properties and kind of went belly-up.
Fast-forward to his story, he graduated 2007 and he wound up leaving the United States in June 2016 to go move overseas and he attempted to move to Germany and it didn't really work out for him, so he wound up finding himself in Thailand and he fell in love and he recently got married last year and his wife and Matthew are expecting their first kid. So we'll all being abroad, he was reassessing what he kind of wanted to do upon his arrival back to the United States and he thought to himself, "I want to get into real estate, but there's probably gonna be some time before I go back to America", so he kind of put some feelers out there abroad and people would say to him, "hey, oh you want to buy a condo, you want to do this" and said, "no, I want to get involved in American real estate", so they're like, okay, well you probably move to marry and he thought, that's basically not practical at this moment, so he got on bigger pockets and he started to try and think creatively of how he could get his foot into the door of commercial real estate and at that point, he heard everybody saying go to meetups, go to meetups, go to meetups, go to meetups.
Well, that's out of the window for him, because there are no meetups about American real estate in Thailand like that's just completely out of the window. So he created a digital meetup and he posted it on bigger pockets and it wasn't knocking down doors and taking names or anything, it was basically six to eight people all throughout the United States and it was hosted on zoom, it ran for about two to three months, but the thing was, he thought outside the box and through that, a lady commented on his post and she gave him some pointers and started off his momentum, started building from there and she said, follow up with me in a month, let me know where things are going, so he followed up in a month, followed up two months, keeping her up to date on how everything was going with him and the third or fourth time he reached out to her it was in regards to syndication calculator or something along those lines and she said, well I I know this guy's name is Omar, he's really good at underwriting, why don't I put you in touch with him, so it just so happened to be working out that was the time that Omar was launching his company Boardwalk Wealth and Omar kind of said, you know, I'm struggling with this, would you mind helping me with this and so he did a simple task of compiling brokers. And then it was another thing and then it was another thing, there was another and then one thing led to him putting him on the website and so he got the ball rolling.
