There are pros and cons to both, but generally speaking you are better off buying in the long term.

Speaking from personal experience, buying and operating a STR via a "checkbook" or "self directed IRA" is fraught with problems and is far more trouble than it's worth. 

Both tenants are complaining about the music being too loud (the down tenant more than the up tenant and their relationship has completely disintegrated to the point where they will not speak to each other. 

By tracking your expenses carefully, you can make sure you're claiming all of the deductions you're entitled to, which can help you reduce your tax liability.
