my strategy when I did court house steps and live in person auctions.most bidders pick a number like you suggest .I would follow along and wait till the end.. and then when I think the most aggressive bidder was at their max and it would usually be like  if the auction started at 200 they may be to 250k and stop most all of the time folks had a number that was rounded off like that.
