I've been told the most efficient way to remove tile (this is not by the book) is to take some dry ice or liquid nitrogen use it to crack all the glue on the floor (hooray thermal gradients) so you can remove it easily.By the book self removal typically requires sealing the area you are removing it, encapsulate it when you remove it (e.g. duct taped contractor trash bags) and clean after the fact with a HEPA vacuum and then a soap based cleaner (our contractor used tub o' towels).
