There are also a lot of relevant add-ons - ElementTree for parsing xml if that is what you get back from your queries, and sqllite if you want to make a database to store the info you gather.Good luck with your project!

As to splitting, you would want to talk to a civil engineer (at least here that's what we do to draw site maps, etc.) though your surveyor might also be a civil.
