This home needs a complete rehab and is heated by oil.

Gas prices went up a little, but that is commensurate with higher oil (per barrel) prices.

And I've never paid a penny for maintenance, tires, brakes, or even oil changes.

I suggest a trade school for welding, or, better yet, go do oil and gas work while you are single and mobile.Some folks may say get your real estate license, but that's not necessary to buy a bunch of houses.

Since then, I am curious if some of that investment are being pulled due to a combination of the political events as well as the sharp decline in oil prices and poor Russian economy as contributing factors to the decline.

Many are close to wind farm and fringe oil areas so I do have the boom potential. 

If not (ie two full-time working spouses) your only other option is going into land conservation deals, solar deals, or oil and gas deals - all of which have some risks.Explained in a different way...1) There are ordinary/W2/active income on one side.
