New Member Introduction

Hello!!  

Not quite a new member as I've been lurking these forums for years, finally deciding to get serious and figured doing the "New Member Introduction" post would be a good step.

Briefly about me:  I'm currently working as a merchant mariner (3rd Mate) and I travel for work about half the year, looking to get into real estate investing to supplement my income and begin building a portfolio during the half of the year when I am home.  

I have been volunteering with local Habitat for Humanity groups to learn how to renovate houses, and currently looking for my first house hack or flip in the southeastern MA area (have been looking at areas such as Barnstable, Plymouth, and Bristol counties).  I also attend the "Multifamily Investors Network of MA" meetup that is hosted monthly in the Boston area when I am home.

Get real clear on what you are looking for. Tell everyone and their brother what you are looking for. Do this all the time, every day, even with strangers. Here's an example I used many years ago:

"I'm interested in a cheap fixer-upper single-family home under $100,000. Do you know of anyone that may have an investment property, hoarder house, or some other property they want to unload quickly?"

After talking about it for three months, someone approached me with a hoarder house. I bought it for $55,000. I cleaned it up, haven't had a day of vacancy in eight years, and it's worth $300,000.
