When Lewis Potts purchased this new home in 1900, he and his wife Martha must have been pleased that the largest bedroom included a separate but open baby nursery for their young son Lewis Jr. The advertisement read: "New house of 8 rooms, reception hall, attic and large closet, fruit trees." Lewis Potts, a "railroader and steamboat man," could afford this large and expensive home with its poured concrete foundation, matchstick hardwood flooring, custom glass-front built in cabinets, beautiful living room fireplace, high ceilings, pocket doors, big windows, archways, and the original stained wood banister staircase just inside the front entry door with side lights (all of this remains!). In an application for the Columbus Historic District in the National Register, 1304 Franklin is described as "Colonial Revival, 2 1/2 story frame, corner square, raking cornice with dentals, columned veranda..." Lewis and Martha Potts had two more children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the home, but after her husband passed, Mrs. Potts rented 3 of the bedrooms to boarders. From a 1962 advertisement for the home by Ross Potts: "Four bedroom, hardwood floors, enclosed back porch, cellar with stoker coal furnace. An older house, solidly built, would make a fine family home or could be converted into a duplex." Available now as an investment property, the new owner could live downstairs and rent the upstairs to pay the mortgage or update the home and potentially double the rental income (all 3 utilities are separated)...Or the new owner could restore this historic home and enjoy downtown living on Franklin Street with 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, and small workshop in the cellar.
