Valiente Defeats Orchard Hill in 2014 C.V. Whitney Cup Wellington Polo


Valiente Team defeated Orchard Hill
during the opening competition of the American Triple Crown, the C.V. Whitney Cup Wellington polo, with a 12-8 winning score at the last Sunday. The Valiente team is composed of Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso while Steve Van Andel, Santiago Chavanne, Pablo MacDonough and Matias MacDonough play for the Orchard team.

In the first chukker, Adolfo Cambiaso scored the only goal through the period, making Valiente in the lead, 1-0.

The second chukker started with Santi Torres converting a 60-yard Safety but consecutive goals from MacDonough brothers, Pablo and Matias, tied up the scores into 2-2. Sapo Caset broke the tie and Torres made another goal, ending the second chukker with 4-2.

The first half ended with 5-4, Valiente still in the lead.

As the second half opened, Caset scored twice, 7-4. But MacDonough brothers responded with this, making the scores to 7-6. Caset and Cambiaso each scored again while Pablo MacDonough cut the lead to 9-7 before the chukker ended.

Cambiaso scored back-to-back in the fifth chukker, 11-7. The fifth period ended 12-8 with Matias MacDonough and Caset scoring for Orchard Hill and Valiente respectively.

The sixth chukker ended without a score from the both teams.Valiente celebrated the 12-8 win.

Cambiaso and Caset led Valiente with five goals each, and Torres added a pair and was named MVP. While the MacDonough brothers scored three goals each, Van Andel and Chavanne adding each goal to the lose. Boeing, Bob Jornayvaz’s horse, (played by Cambiaso) took BPP honors.

Meanwhile, in the Subsidiary Les Armour Cup, Flight Options (Grant Ganzi, Eduardo Astrada, Miguel Astrada and Alejandro Astrada) won against Audi (Marc Ganzi, Gonzalito Pieres, Rodrigo Andrade and Gonzalo Del Tour), 11-10. Rodrigo Andrade was hailed as the MVP.
