Why I Hate Painted Brick and You Should Too!

Normal 1561126729 Painted Brick House In White Painting A Red Grey

There are very few things in current Home Design trends that really irk me but Painted Brick is one of them. Below are my top 5 reasons why I hate painted brick.

  1. It takes away the character of the brick. One of the things I love about brick homes is that there is a lot of character in the natural brick. Take for example a red brick house. You will see a variation in the different shades of the color red on the outside of the house. Is it a distinct look whereas with painted red brick is very uniform and bland.

2. Over time it can damage the brick. The thing about paint on the exterior of the house that sometimes it can trap moisture. Over time through the natural hot and cold cycle, the brick can erode as water freezes and expands when it is trapped inside the brick.

3. If done incorrectly it can look bad over time. If you use the wrong exterior paint over time it can degrade. This can cause the paint to start to peel and flake away giving your home a dilapidated and un-lived in look. This is sure to make your neighbors love you and love your home even more.

4. Once you do it, it’s hard to go back. If you do it wrong, it’s very hard to go back. Yeah, it is true that you can personalize sandblasted but you risk damaging brick underneath. Another option is to use chemicals but only people who don’t care about the environment use that.

5. It might be against codes if you live in a historic neighborhood. If your home is an older home, then painting the brick may be against the local codes of the historic neighborhood. Since newer brick is made by machine, older brick that was made in a kiln has a much more historical value and in my opinion, worth preserving
