Why even concern yourself with the legality if it’s self serving and harmful to your family member?  

My two year at the time old grab the edge to help stand up from the seated position on the floor and the glass stop slid off and almost caused severe harm.

But because you rent by the room and YOU SELECTED the roommates (for which the other roommates had no control over), that makes you directly responsible to the other tenants should any harm or damage come to them.  

As an investor, comps tend to harm you more than help.

It might cause me financial harm as I have to sell more stocks and might pay short term capital gains vs long term capital gains.
