I figure I need about $200 in miscellaneous materials for a job (flue pipe, screws, tape, mastic, etc...)

If you go tile, start small with a backsplash or something and don't use mastic, but use real thinset that you must mix.

I use mastic (tile adhesive) to float tile grout lines or unevenness and just use the peel-and-stick over top of that once it's flat, dry, and clean.

All mfrs work about the same whether its a sheet good or rubberized mastic system.
