It's actually not so long in Ohio but every state is different.In Ohio it needs at least two years of being an agent, close 40 transactions for others (your own properties won't be counted) and 2 year college degree.I was researching what it takes in TX (my daughter lives there and I'm contemplating some business there as well) and it requires bachelors degree to become a broker.
