I ask EVERYONE for references (other contractors, plumber, electrician, framer, hvac) and then I have several to select between.  3) I've had the patience and determination to push through all the permits/inspections and dealing with Pittsburgh laws -- I don't like that stuff but find it worth it as rents are high in the city.

At any rate, turns out our framer uses Menard's doors all the time and was able to install those despite the plans calling for custom-sized doors.
