The only thing I like better than carpet in common area stairs is the rubbery flooring (with the grip option) that you see sometimes in commercial spaces (think doctor's offices, hospitals, etc.).

It's not more a function of taking on debt it was the TERMS of the debt and the TIMING of the cycle that could lead to a bad outcome.If someone makes a high enough income they can usually OUT EARN problems over time and recover.Example Doctor makes 1 million a year.
