On dog size I feel differently because little dogs although maybe they can't do as much damage, in my experience they are yappers so a big noise issue.

@Marc Winter we are struggling with this exact issue on carpet vs laminate but being a second floor condo sometimes its noise and sometimes there is alot of subfloor work to put in the vinyl, increasing the cost alot.

One of our properties is on the far south side over my UW-Rock, which is my favorite rental spot because it's full of single family and duplex homes, lots of cul-du-sacs that keep traffic noise down, and near the interstate.

I own an upper/lower and it can be loud for downstairs and been contemplating putting carpet in the bedrooms in the back just to deaden noise for privacy.
