Gary, assuming your architect or engineer is not overseeing the project - on a rehab of a multi-unit complex like that I would actually look to a GC that does insurance restoration work rather than a remodeling GC.

Then hire a construction company, with vans and prominently displayed contractor license numbers, NOT a dude in a truck, to give you a real estimate on the basement.

Fully acknowledged that I'm not an architect/contractor with the credibility to make that judgement, but I consulted in person with several architects and contractors who all agreed that the addition looks at surface level well-built. 

Most of the demo work has been done in the home and the architect has the drawings for expanding the home.

Thankfully, now I pay an architect to measure and draw up plans, especially for my typical renovation (which involves gutting and lots of walls moving).
