My insurance co might write me up to a 30K check for damage to property from a recent storm.

This is an expired lease, so payment is not a concern unless OP seeks financial damages.

Unless the carpet is obviously damaged by the tenants, it's a no go.

They don’t have much of an online reputation other than their own site/postings and although their presentation looks legitimate, I’m hesitant to outlay that kind of cash without verifying.

Hell, even if you can prove this it still may not hold any weight.Get the mold remediated and fix the structure and craawl space items that are damaged. 

There's the installation, removal, and the big one (water damage already spotted) is the damage done that you can't see to the frame, and anything else the water made its way to.
