I have experience with New Yorkers buying property in Florida while the are still working to lock in the ownership price before they retire, and before the price goes up. Some communities allow seasonal rentals so the owner can use the property for vacation, and they can cover some of the carry costs with seasonal rental income. It isn't for everyone, but you would be surprised how many New York, New Jersey, and other northeastern residents are looking at Florida for weather, for low tax, and recreation.
