Bid on Multiple Short Sales

I'm planning on taking a trip to Florida for a few days in search of my first investment property. I'm thinking short sales or reo is where I will get the best value, but I heard that the short sale process can take a very long time. I will only be in town for a few days and I may want to make offers on several homes (although I only want to buy one). Is this a legitimate / legal strategy? I don't want to get stuck with more obligations than I'm budgeting for. Thanks in advance.
