Why Your First Home Should Be a Duplex

We talk a lot about househacking on this site, for a good reason! It's a phenomenal way to get started in real estate.

It's also just a smart idea. I want to spread the idea that househacking isn't just for those who want to build a rental portfolio. It's great for that, but you don't have to want to hold the duplex as a rental after you're done. You can keep living in it, or trade it up for your next home!

Househacking is great for:

  • Those who want to build a rental porftolio
  • Those who want to pay off student loans
  • Those who want to travel more than normal
  • Those who want to save up for their dream home
  • Those who want to live on a budget
  • Those who want to spend their money on other hobbies
  • Those pursuing FI through more traditional investments
  • Those who want to start a business or pursue entrepreneurship

  • My point is that househacking isn't just for real estate investors. Living in a duplex for your first home is just a smart idea! You can use the cash savings, equity and experience to build other businesses or just enjoy life more. Do you have a dream of buying a nice home with a pool? Househack for 5 years and save 20% down to make it a reality! Use your imagination, it doesn't just have to be for starting a rental portfolio.
