I was recently analyzing a property for a potential rental. This was a single family home and I saw that it was last sold in 2005 for roughly $50k. The owner of the house recently (2016) did a complete renovation and updated the house. The house is now for sale for $150k (2017).

Property taxes on the house for the year 2016 were $600. If the property is sold for $150k will this cause the property taxes to go up or will they remain similar to the prior year?

Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks!

@David Zheng Congrats on the great success! I have began the process of buying real estate in St. louis, MO as well. What areas of the city have you had success in?

@Nicholas Patrick Real estate is a great investment to use for diversification purposes. I totally agree that if you are building an overall portfolio it is advantageous to have both a 401k (or IRA) along with Real Estate. Real Estate can be much more lucrative with less risk. The great thing is that you make the decision on how you want to save for retirement!

Being a new investor, I rely on websites such as Zillow or Realtor.com to find listings. Time and time again I discover these properties are no longer on the market even thought they are listed on these sites. I am trying to find the best way to search for properties and use something that is more realiable and accurate.

Any advice or tips on where to find properties on how to go about this are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Alex
