Post: Lead in water...solutions?

We have a house under contract that has a well and so we had the water tested. There is lead in the water from the kitchen sink that is 7 times the reportable level. The water testing company says that usually lead is not in wells, that usually it comes from the solder used on copper pipes. The house was built in 1992 and there are copper pipes. He suggested either replacing all of the plumbing in the house or getting a whole house reverse osmosis filtration system. Has anyone else had this issue? What did you do? I've never replaced all the plumbing in an existing house. What is the cost comparison between replacing and filtering? Can someone explain how the reverse osmosis system works? Is there a filter on each faucet? It seems to me that if the water is filtered and then put through the same pipes it will become "re-leaded?"

I believe that as long as you have shown income after expenses for at least 2 years on your taxes, it is counted as income for the traditional lenders just like it would on a W2.

@Shawnya Hallin That’s a great idea! Sounds like the crash pad you stayed in had hot beds too. Hot beds are rented by the night. We could probably make even more on those, but they would be a lot more work, I think. Ours will have only cold beds, meaning that a person rents the bed for the month and when they are not there, nobody sleeps in their bed. I will keep your contact info and let you know when we plan to do our next ones!

@Don Konipol Wow! Thank you for that! I honestly had not even thought seriously of separating the two. There is still time for me to do that.

@Dominique Francois We have four bedrooms in the house. The smallest room is a single room, one room has three single beds, one has two bunk beds (4 people), and one has three bunk beds (6 people). We charge different amounts per bed depending on how many people are in the room and the proximity to the bathroom. In our city, the max we're allowed to house for the size of this house is 14.

Lol, we didn't make up the name, it's not a new idea, just not well known. I've heard flight attendants call them "trash pads" before. They won't be able to call ours that, though! Our business entity name is Crash Here, LLC. (Okay, maybe we're a little sadistic) We believe Crash Here will take off, though! Look on the Crashpad411 site for some of your research. There is a need for them. It's like an Airbnb for crash pads. Let me know if you want to know more. We've been discussing how to partner with people in other areas of the country to open them up near the major hubs. Because it's a little more like an Airbnb, I think it would help to have someone local who can check in. Before we can do that we want to make sure this one works, though!
