Casey Moen in addition to my comment above you could also pursue the accounting degree; yet, instead of focusing on taxation or managerial accounting you could focus on auditing. Think of it as such, you being your own compliance officer to ensure your business processes are consistent and in accordance with your business strategy and expectations. Just a thought! Wishing you great success on your endeavors!

Perhaps pursuing a degree in accounting to supplement your MBA could help you in the long run, especially if you focus on taxation and managerial accounting. These two focus areas would certainly aid in understanding more of your business, such as tax implications through your various transactions or general accounting/bookkeeping.

Hi Jose Barrios! Thanks for your response. The property is located in the Belmont-Craigin area. We have three meters but the breaker boxes are not 200 amp breaker boxes. Instead we have two 100 amp breaker boxes and then a sub-panel fuse box. My thoughts would be to have a 200 amp breaker box for each level of the property, where the basement, garage and utility room are all tied into one of those breaker boxes. Hopefully this makes more sense.

Awesome insight! Logan A. Could we possibly connect? I'm pursuing my CPA certification and my current work experience is in auditing and compliance work, yet my passion is really in real estate investing. I'm wondering if you could share some insight in how you came about merging those two aspects of your profession. Looking forward to connecting. ~Anthony

Hi Loren Thomas! *My apologies for the long post in advance.* I've recently purchased a 3 flat in the Chicago, IL area. Currently the layout of the property is as follows: •2nd floor unit: Kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and living room •1st floor unit: Kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and living room •Basement level: (Divided into a legal garden unit & public utility/laundry room) -Garden unit has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room and kitchen -Utility room has washer & dryer, 3 HVAC units and 3 water heaters. I believe the current electrical panel set up includes two 110Amp panels with a fuse box daisy-chained to one of those panels (this set up looked somewhat odd to me). In your experience, would you recommend I upgrade the electrical set up so that each living unit runs a 220amp panel with the 3rd 220amp panel box powering the basement, garage and utility room? If so what would be your very rough estimate to perform that upgrade to the electrical system? I hope this description gives you enough information. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks for your time and I look forward to your insights. ~Anthony

Anthony Ellison very nice! I'd say you can make an Evernote notebook where you can document meeting notes to help hold your group accountable. Count me in if you'd need help or members for this group! I'd definitely love to share my perspective and equally gain new insights from all of you here on BP.

Hi Anthony! This sounds very much like a Mastermind group...which is a great idea. There are a lot of great articles on this newer concept and other helpful tools that could be used to facilitate these accountability groups. Thinking a bit more about this, you could all collaborate by using web applications such as google docs, hangout or tools such as ToDoist and Evernote. I'd be interested in becoming a part of this, if I was living near Houston. Unfortunately I'm up north in Chicago. Wishing you much success with this initiative. ~Anthony

Greetings all,

I graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, IL., in 2014, with a dual degree in Accounting and Management Information Systems, with a concentration in Economics.

I'm a Chicago local, working for a Telecommunications company as an internal auditor, specializing in financial, operational, and information system audits. I'm currently pursuing my certification as a public accountant (CPA) and information systems auditor (CISA); however, when my 9-5 job ends I'm continuously seeking new learning opportunities within the real estate. Currently, I'm in the process of closing on the purchase of a 3 unit, multi-family home, which will be my primary place of residence while I work towards increasing my passive income revenue streams.

My long-term plan is to continue building up my multi-unit residential real estate portfolio to grant me the opportunity to delve into commercial real estate investments and commercial development. I hope to connecting with more of you as I more forward on this journey, as well as looking forward to learning as much as I can from all of you.

Thanks! ~ Anthony
