Chicago is tenant friendly so you have to be careful who you rent to, and follow the law. Which you really should be doing anyway, no matter where you invest. 

I agree with @Dale Stevens: I won't do rentals in the city but I know people who swear by it. The laws are the laws of Illinois and as a whole it is tenant friendly but Cook county is particularly poignant. The landlord tenant act is rough but that isn't to say that all of chicagoland is passable. We are finding good deals and good renters as are our other investing counterparts. You can do long term here but just make sure you know what you are getting into and have a strong lease. I hope that helps,

Hazel crest might not be so bad for a new investor. I am in Homewood and Flossmoor and those markets can be tough and a higher price point to get them done but Hazel Crest can be much less capital risk when you are learning. Just make sure you pick a great realtor on the back end sales. PM me and I can refer a good realtor for that model if you're serious.
